We all know what stress feels like: a racing heart, a knot in the stomach, trembling hands. Stress is a normal part of life and in short bursts, it acts a survival mechanism – the ancestral “fight-or-flight” response was designed long ago to keep us safe from immediate danger. The hormones that are released by the adrenal gland help you to stay alert, focused and motivated in the face of danger and despite living in a very different world to our forebears, this response has not changed.
What has changed are the stresses we’re placed under. Modern life often keeps our stress alarms ringing long after the initial threat has passed. This causes a shift from short term to chronic stress, and when stress becomes chronic, it stops being a protector and becomes a problem. Because our bodies like interconnected networks, long-term stress doesn’t just exhaust your mind, it can affect virtually every system in your body.
What Happens When You’re Stressed?
The “fight-or-flight” response is a survival mechanism which triggers the adrenal gland to release the key stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These prepare you to respond to perceived danger, increasing alertness and focus in both mental and physical ways. Your heart beats faster, your breathing becomes quicker, and your muscles tense. All of these are beneficial in the short term to help respond to and deal with a stressful situation, but if the effects of stress ae prolonged, this can place significant strain on the body.
Let’s take a closer look at how chronic stress affects each major body system.
1. The Nervous System
Whilst no one system in the body is more important than others, the nervous system is often classed as your “command centre”. It acts as the master switch. The hypothalamus, a small but vital region in the brain, is part of this key body system, controlling many essential functions which keep us alive and healthy. When it encounters stress, the hypothalamus signals to your pituitary and adrenal glands to flood your body with stress hormones including adrenaline and cortisol.
Short term effects
The release of these hormones prepare the body to deal with whatever challenge or threat is present at the time, with the short-term benefits of:
- Increased alertness and focus
- Faster reaction times
- Heightened senses.
Long term effects
Once the threat has been eliminated, these hormones are supposed to subside, but if they don’t, long term effects can occur. This can be classed as a chronic state of stress response. Symptoms include:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Irritability and mood swings
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory problems
- Sleep disturbances and insomnia
2. The Cardiovascular System
In times of stress or danger, your cardiovascular system reacts by preparing the body for immediate action. This is driven by the nervous system with the same stress hormones impacting the CV system.
Physical signs include an increased heart rate/palpitations, a feeling of coldness washing over the hands and feel caused by narrowed blood vessels and a “pounding heart” which can feel like a pulsing in the neck/temples and/or a pounding in the chest.
Short-Term Effects:
- Increased heart rate
- Elevated blood pressure
- Constricted blood vessels
Long-Term Effects:
As with physical signs of stress caused by the nervous system response, keeping the cardiovascular system in a chronic state of stress can cause health problems by putting strain on your arteries.
- Tension headaches
- Muscle tension
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Higher likelihood of heart attacks and strokes
- Chronic inflammation of blood vessels
3. The Respiratory System
The respiratory system reacts to stress hormones by causing you to breathe harder and faster (known as hyperventilation) which is to ensure oxygen-rich blood is distributed around the body quickly. From an evolutionary perspective, faster breathing would help meet the body’s increased demand for oxygen when running away from a predator, and this concept still applies today.
The short-term benefits of this work to:
- Increase oxygen rate which supports the heart
- Rapid oxygenation of the muscles to prepare for rapid physical activity
- Increased energy production
However, hyperventilation is not beneficial in the long-term as it affects the balance of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and oxygen in the blood. If you end up breathing out too much CO₂ (which your body can account for in the short term), long-term this affects how alkaline your blood becomes and how the blood vessels which supply the brain work.
Long-Term Effects:
- Worsening asthma symptoms
- Increased severity of respiratory conditions
- Ongoing breathing difficulties linked to anxiety
In addition, individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may find that stress can trigger sudden breathing crises and panic attacks.
4. The Musculoskeletal System
When stress hormones start to circulate, your muscles tense up all at once to protect themselves from potential injury and help you to fight off threats. The short term effects are protective and manifest as:
- Tight shoulders and neck
- Jaw clenching
- Muscle tension
- Tense back muscles
However, if the muscles remain in a stress state over days or weeks at a time, this chronic state of tension can place additional strain on the musculoskeletal system.
Long-Term Effects:
- Chronic tension headaches/migraines
- Neck, shoulder and back pain
- Increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries
- Less flexibility in the muscles, increasing the changes of strains and sprains
- Ongoing stiffness and aching muscles
5. The Digestive System
The relationship between stress and digestion is much stronger than many people realise. Called the “gut-brain axis”, this two way communication system links the nervous system with the gastrointestinal tract, meaning that the stress hormones released are what cause the feeling of “butterflies” in the tummy or an upset stomach during times of tension. These symptoms happen because the brain prioritises survival over digestion.
Short-Term Effects:
- A feeling of “butterflies” in the tummy
- Stomach discomfort/pain/nausea
- Changes or a loss in appetite
- Indigestion
The body can cope with these changes to digestion for short periods of time but ongoing impact to the digestive system can alter gut motility (how well your body digests food), increase stomach acid, and disrupt the delicate balance of gut bacteria.
Long-Term Effects:
- Slower digestion
- Acid reflux
- Changes in gut microbiome balance
- Resulting weight gain or weight loss
- Reduced immune function through poor dietary choices
- Changes in mood and wellbeing
6. The Endocrine System
The endocrine system is responsible for producing and regulating essential hormones which regulate core body functions including metabolism, growth, mood, sleep, energy levels and reproduction. When faced with the release of stress hormones, the endocrine system responds by working alongside the nervous system by releasing cortisol, which helps to push the body into a heightened state to deal with the perceived threat.
This cortisol release increases alertness and concentration, with beneficial short term effects for survival such as:
- Increased blood sugar levels for quick energy
- Increased blood pressure which causes the heart to pump more forcefully and faster
- Constricted blood vessels to help direct blood flow to critical areas of the body.
Chronic stress causing the endocrine system to be kept on high alert causes health problems such as:
- Hormonal imbalances
- Increased risk of type 2 diabetes through how the body regulates blood sugar and insulin
- Fatigue and burnout
- Difficulty regulating energy levels
7. The Immune System
Stress has a complex relationship with immunity, and its effects differ depending on whether the stress is short-term or long-term. When stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released, the body starts to prepare for potential injuries or infections, so key defence systems are put on “high alert”.
The short term effects of this include:
- Temporary boost in immune activity
- Immune cells are mobilised and redistributed throughout the body.
- Inflammation may temporarily increase to aid healing and protection.
Whilst this sounds great on the surface, this is meant to be a short term response only. If the stress factors don’t reduce, and stress becomes chronic, the immune system cannot keep up with the ongoing demand and actually starts to work less effectively.
Long-Term Effects:
- Suppressed immune function leading to more colds and illnesses
- Increased susceptibility to infections
- Slower wound healing
- Greater risk of chronic inflammation
8. The Reproductive System
The reproductive system is highly sensitive to stress because reproduction is not considered an immediate priority during times of perceived danger. As a result, both short-term and long-term stress can affect hormone production, fertility, sexual function and reproductive health.
Men and women will see different symptoms of the reproductive system’s response to stress.
Short term effects on women:
- Delayed ovulation
- Temporary changes to periods/period timings
- Reduced libido
- Increased premenstrual symptoms
Short term effects on men:
- Temporary erectile dysfunction or difficulties
- Reduced libido
- Lower sexual performance
- Increased distraction
When stress becomes chronic, persistently elevated cortisol can interfere with the normal production of reproductive hormones, sexual desire and attention span.
Chronic effects on women:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- More severe premenstrual symptoms
- Reduced fertility
- Increased pregnancy complications
Chronic effects on men:
- Reduced testosterone levels
- Lower sperm production
- Erectile dysfunction
- Reduced libido
Ultimately, your body talks to you in the language of symptoms. A chronic headache, a stubborn illness or ongoing digestive problems are often just your systems crying out for a break. Understanding how stress disrupts your biology is the first step toward taking it seriously and taking steps to bring your hormones and glands back in alignment.
